Explore the innovative ways we supported children in 2024.

Contents

  • In 2024, we expanded our partnership with Green Climate Fund (GCF) which saw three new projects approved:
    • Sierre Leone: increasing climate resilience for 1.3 million people in coastal communities.
    • Mozambique: GCF's first support for climate resilient social protection for 975,000 people
    • Malawi: building the climate resilience of health systems for 4.2 million people
  • Notable achievements of ongoing projects include supporting 40 communities in Vanuatu to develop community adaptation plans.
  • Alongside current GCF-funded projects in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Laos PDR, ongoing programming funded by GCF and co-financers aims to reach 9.4 million people.

  • In 2024, Library For All (LFA) grew its culturally relevant book collections across Australia, Bhutan, Myanmar, Kenya, Nepal and Vanuatu, creating 351 new titles in six languages. The Reader app now hosts 4,000+ titles, with 10,000+ users/downloads. LFA tech solutions expanded to Kenya, Papua New Guinea, South Sudan and Zambia.
  • LFA's Social-Emotional Learning collection was adapted for use in four new contexts strengthening Save the Children's education and psychosocial support programs.
  • The Our Yarning program published 84 books by and for First Nations communities, including a climate change series integrating Traditional Knowledge with contemporary disaster preparedness strategies.

  • Victoria saw an 18% reduction in the number of children entering out-of-home care thanks to our evidence-informed family strengthening practices, implemented along with our partners, the Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare, the Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency (VACCA), and the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
  • We helped improve outcomes for children in Singapore through the nationwide expansion of the KidSTART home visiting program, in collaboration with our partners Monash University, Research for Impact, and Singapore Early Childhood Development Agency.
  • In the UK, the nation’s first Practice Guide on Kinship Care was produced, and the government is trialling a £44 financial allowance for carers, thanks to recommendations in our systematic evidence review, undertaken in partnership with Colorado State University, Foundations, and Monash University.

  • We received a highly commended award as Asset Manager of the year at the Australian Impact Investment Summit.
  • We made follow-on Investments into Intellischool and Inquisitive, and a new investment into ATEC.
  • We doubled down on APAC healthcare for our Fund II strategy alongside other Save the Children Members.

  • We joined forces with 15 philanthropic and other organisations to form the Coalition for Mutual Aid in Sudan, and helped support the life-saving efforts of frontline responders by rolling out local humanitarian leadership training.
  • Thanks to two new grants, we expanded the Crisis Leadership Program to the Middle East and ran our first Arabic language courses. Across the Middle East and Ukraine, 134 participants completed the Crisis Leadership Program in 2024.
  • A record 104 students commenced the seventh cohort of the Diplôme d’Études Supérieures en Leadership Humanitaire, a French-language humanitarian leadership diploma accredited by Deakin University.

  • In 2024 we opened our biggest new store to date, in Butler, Western Australia as part of our retail store expansion. The welcoming environment offers the community a space to shop, donate, volunteer, and participate in local events.
  • Our annual book sale in Western Australia raised more than $310,000 – a record achievement.
  • Our corporate volunteering program was a vital part of our retail stores’ success, with 787 corporate volunteers from 96 teams across 18 organisations giving a total of 4,146 hours to our stores and warehouses.

In 2024, Save the Children Australia was supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) to implement programs in Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tonga, Vanuatu and Vietnam; through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP) to implement programs in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Turkiye, Vanuatu and Vietnam; and through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to support Lao PDR. Save the Children Australia is a member of the Emergency Action Alliance (EAA), a collective of Australia-based aid organisations that uses its combined reach and resources to raise more money for greater impact.
