A Day in the life of a Face-to-Face Fundraiser

05 June 2025, Impact of Our Work

When you meet a Save the Children face-to-face fundraiser on your doorstep or in the street, you might not realise just how much their work matters — or how hard it can be.

To celebrate the impact they have on our programs and to better understand what it’s really like, our CEO Mat Tinkler recently joined Shabaz, one of our incredible fundraising team members, for a day of doorknocking:

It’s not always easy — and that’s okay

Not everyone is in a position to give. Our fundraisers know that. They approach every door with empathy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to listen, as well as an abundance of resilience — especially when it’s cold, raining, or they’ve been walking all day.

Smiling, staying present, and moving on to the next door takes emotional strength, an indomitable spirit, and a belief in the cause. That’s why we’re so proud of our teams, and why we believe their work deserves to be seen.

The value of a “yes”

Every conversation our fundraisers have is an opportunity to help change children’s lives. Regular donations help power the work we do, keeping children safe, supporting their education, and helping families rebuild after crises. Every time someone decides to give, it creates immediate and lasting impact.

And for the fundraiser, it’s also a moment of joy.

“That’s the best part of the job,” says Shabaz. “You get a good buzz from that one person or two people that actually say yes and express their gratitude and how much they love the charity, and you just leave on a positive note for the next person.”

A “yes” means they have successfully connected someone who wants to make a difference with the chance to do it through our work. After hours of walking, smiling, and being told “not today,” a “yes” is a spark that keeps them going.

A team worth backing

Shabaz, our entire face-to-face team, and the people they inspire are part of the reason we can respond so quickly to emergencies, provide long-term support to children and families, and create change in communities across the globe.

“It’s people like Shabaz and the supporters they sign up that make everything we do possible,” says Mat.

“There's heart and hope behind every conversation we have on a person's doorstep or on a city street,” says Shabaz. "And we’re just so grateful to everyone who stops, listens, and says ‘yes’.”
